EDM/EDR operator for long throws
Responsible for set up, calibrating, and operation of the electronic measuring equipment to ensure accurate and fair measurement in a timely manner
Communication with the field referee, event heads, and the timing company were required ensure safe and seamless events
Responsibilities included but were not limited to ensuring that EDM and EDR operators operated safely and seamlessly at two locations, within the guidelines of WMA rules and regulations, by interacting with meet management, referees, the EDR head, the timing company, and field event heads to ensure that team members were in place and ready to go prior to the start of each event. To accomplish this schedules had to be created well in advance of the start date of the Championship and adjusted daily as dynamics changed. There was a EDM team zoom shortly after the team announcements were made and another approximately a week before competition to ensure that team members were up to date with changes that had taken place. There was a team briefing upon arrival at the facility and a debriefing at the end of the championship. Communication amongst team members and meet management was constant during the meet via text to ensure that we were all aware of what was going on
Responsibilities included but were not limited to scheduling and monitoring our EDM and EDR to ensure that we were in compliance with the rules of events to ensure accurate distance measurement throughout the championship
Please see previous EDM/EDR Head official assignments for a description
Responsibilities included but were not limited to accurate distance measurements, equipment checks, data recording, in accordance with World Athletic rules and guidelines, and collaboration with other officials while ensuring a safe work environment
Facilitated a EDR/EDM training with the assistance of EDM/EDR certified official Hermel Gordon at UNC Charlotte for USATF certified officials
Training followed the syllabus used at Virginia Beach where I assisted EDM/EDR Judge Jo Burrows
Day 1 consisted of trainees receiving comprehensive hands on EDR training as well as an explanation of the interaction between the Fieldlynx program and a total station in a classroom setting
Officials were then given hands on training for proper positioning and setup of the total station for throws as well as horizontal events. Officials were required to set up and practice with equipment at the various venues after becoming comfortable with setting up
Day 2 consisted of officials assigned as EDM and EDR operators at various events during the Body Armor State meet under the supervision of EDM/EDR certified officials
I became EDM/EDR certified just before COVID in 2019
I was fortunate to have had access a GOWin total station form Icahn stadium and practice at Icahn before the shut down
I was allowed to take the equipment home and learn about the machine, as well as Fieldlynx by practicing using both during the shutdown
Towards the end of the shutdown 12th Rock in NY began hosting social distancing throws series which allowed me as one of the few certified EDM operators in the area with a total station to be their long throws EDM operator from September 2020 to June 2021
I am applying for the position of EDM/EDR judge to assist officials who show an interest in electronic measurement in becoming knowledgeable of the USATF EDM/EDR family
When I was learning the basics of the specialty I was able to reach out to George Leaf, Marty Johnson, Jo Burrows when I got stuck
Now as a more seasoned certified EDM/EDR operator I still use those resources as well as Mark Heckel, Gail Barna, Anthony James, Hermel Gordon, Todd Hurley Dwayne Evans, and others that I have met along the way as sounding boards
I have made myself accessible to everyone that I have helped learn EDR/EDR and will continue to do so should I be deemed worthy to become an EDM/EDR Judge
