Rohan Chakrabarty

Harris Road Middle School:

• VEX IQ Robotics Team, Cabarrus County School, Harris Road Middle School for grades 7th and 8th. The VEX IQ Program is a robot construction system that helped me as student develop a variety of skills, including STEM skills, critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, problem solving, and soft skills such as communication, collaboration, and time management. My VEX team competed in competitions held year-round at the regional, state, and national levels, which then culminate in the VEX Robotics World Championship each May. Program was outside of regular school hours (early morning prior to school and nights and weekends).
• My team qualified and participated in the 2022 VEX IQ World Championship Competition in Dallas, Texas, May 5-7, 2022.
• VEX awards achieved by my VEX teams included: Teamwork Champion Award 2021-22, Design Award 2021-22, Judges Award 2022-23

• Member of Harris Road Middle School Band, I was first chair oboist for 7th and 8th grades. Regional Band Competition, North Carolina Bandmasters Association, South Central District, Wingate University, March 2021 and March 2022. Band performance, Carowinds Park, April 8. 2022.

• First Chair oboist, and Section Leader oboist throughout entire 5-year musical career, Cabarrus County Schools, (Harris Road Middle School and Cox Mill High School so far).
• Vex IQ Robotics, robot driver and team leader of world championship qualified team that participated in the VEX world championship competition, Dallas, Texas May 5-7, 2022.
• High School English II Shakespeare's Julius Caesar Debate MVP.

Other Interests, Talents and Hobbies:

• Music and playing musical instruments. Fluent in reading music and playing the oboe, piano, and guitar.
• Archery, private archery classes, Charlotte, N.C.
• Interest in Computer Science, taught myself Python and C#. Interest in 3D rendering software such as Unity and Unreal Engine, independently learned how to use both. Interest in engineering, taught myself how to solder and have completed various independent projects involving soldering such as constructing a home-made radio.
• I also do reverse engineering projects to learn about how equipment is made. Interest in Art/Animation - Taught myself how to use animation software like Adobe Animate and I enjoy creating art.
• Interest in Cinematography and Screenwriting, have taught myself a lot about the film industry and always had a big interest in creative works and stories.
• Interest in Astronomy and Space, I have independently explored these interests.
• Both of my parents are medical professionals- one is a physician and one is a veterinarian, and I have enjoyed learning about medicine and science from my parents. I am interested in health and disease and how they diagnose and treat their patients, both human and animals.
• Reading publications STEM related periodicals. Examples inclde subscription to MIT Technology Review and subscription to OYLA Popular Science Magazine for Students and Parents

June 2024 I learned how to do mathematical data analysis in the context of the natural biological world, exploring the summary of data both by hand, and in Excel. I was part of small group for experiment design, data collection and excel presentation.
• NCSSM Summer Accelerator Program: Durham Accelerator Math Modeling: Designing Innovative Solutions for Messy Real-World Problems, Forrest Hinton, July 9-14, 2023, Durham Campus, Durham, N.C. Solving big, messy, real-world problems in Math Modeling! I learned how to use the math modeling process to analyze and solve a wide variety of problems .I worked as part of a small team to define our problems, identify variables, state their assumptions, create math models, assess their models, and report solutions.
• NCSSM Summer Accelerator Program: Game Design & Development, Luke Shofestall, June 11-June, 17, 2023. In Game Design I discovered and developed a variety of industry skills as I utilized the design process to create and test my group's own games.
• NCSSM Summer Accelerator Program: Exploration in Genetics, Dr. Rachel Hillyer, June 12-17, 2022 Morganton Campus, Morganton, N.C. Built models of DNA and proteins, practiced using the genetic code to translate mRNA into amino acids, and simulated what happens during a polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
• Independently explore my interest in computer science Independently explore my interest in electronics and technology: taking apart various electronics and teaching myself how to solder.
