My name is Nathan Sullivan, but I typically go by Nate. It is an immense pleasure to apply for your graduate program at American University with the intention of obtaining a history degree in the future. As of writing this cover letter, I am a senior at Elon University with a history major. I formerly had a double major in History and Communication Design, but I chose to strictly focus on the former because it is my passion. I cannot stress enough how much I love history. I would fundamentally be a different individual if I was not passionate about the subject.
To provide further information about my work experience, over the summer of 2021, I worked at Sprout Landscaping and was employed by a family friend of mine named William Siler (email: william.siler@sprout-cls.com). It was difficult labor, but it made me appreciate those who worked that job for a living. My job was to weed-eat and/or edge sidewalks and blow them off as a final touch. During breaks from school, I work as a cashier at my local Harris Teeter in Charlotte. The job consists of scanning and bagging items and finalizing transactions. I have also done some restocking at Harris Teeter, but not frequently. As for the classroom environment, I contribute to historiographical discussion to my fullest extent, such as analyzing an assigned reading with my professors and classmates. For historical studies, I have taken classes ranging from History of Modern China, Modern Middle Eastern History, History of the British Empire, to the American Civil War.
I would be a beneficial graduate student at American University because of my versatility in understanding history. I specialize in the World Wars, but am also an aficionado for the Cold War, the Middle East, the Crimean War, Medieval history, and ever increasingly, classical Roman history. Regarding historical information, I have a photographic memory. If I see an interesting historical fact, I will remember it. I would love to showcase my knowledge and passion for the subject with you personally, so please reach out to me preferably at nsullivan13@elon.edu if you have any questions.
