Accomplishments

My journey has provided me with a deep and personal understanding of the challenges faced by individuals navigating both the criminal justice system and the complexities of substance use. From 1991 to 1995, I experienced incarceration firsthand, an experience that offered a stark perspective on the isolation, stigma, and systemic barriers that can often accompany involvement with the law. Prior to and during this period, from 1988 to 1995, I also battled with substance use, a struggle that profoundly impacted my life and relationships.

Since 1995, I have maintained my freedom and sobriety, a testament to my commitment to recovery and personal growth. This sustained period of wellness has equipped me with valuable insights into the processes of change, relapse prevention, and building a fulfilling life beyond these challenges.

Furthermore, I have personal experience navigating the intersection of mental health and recovery. Between 2006 and 2009, I faced a setback related to mental health challenges, including depression, PTSD, and anxiety. This experience has provided me with a firsthand understanding of the vulnerabilities that can arise, the importance of mental wellness in sustained recovery, and the need for compassionate and informed support during difficult times.

These lived experiences—navigating incarceration, overcoming substance use, and managing mental health challenges—have instilled in me a profound sense of empathy, resilience, and a deep belief in the possibility of recovery and positive change. I understand the complexities of these journeys not just from an academic perspective, but from the heart. I am eager to utilize these experiences to connect with and support others who may be facing similar challenges, offering hope, understanding, and practical guidance based on my own path towards wellness.
