Performs bed assignments based upon established protocols, patient diagnosis, physician
specialty and service and bed support availability. Ensures that clinical areas are notified timely of
patients needing placement, keeps delays to a minimum. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of
service and specialty lines, ensures that bed placement complies with departmental policies and
procedures.
• Acts as a liaison between admitting physicians, nursing units, and other departments to facilitate
the prompt and accurate assignment of patients into beds, resolve operational issues, and make
recommendations to improve access to the facility.
• Responds professionally and effectively to the diverse needs of callers in the Transfer Center by
using resources to screen calls accurately and efficiently; paging and/or connecting paging
physician as needed; taking complete, accurate, legible messages and communicating these
messages to the appropriate parties; facilitating hospital transfers; creating acute care records
and encounters as needed.
• Maintains an accurate and up-to-date census of the hospital bed status. Communicates with the
Nursing Supervisor and Bed Control RN to advise them of high patient census. Communicates
bed needs timely to the Nursing Supervisors and Patient Placement RN. Participates in daily bed
huddles to expedite patient placement.
• Complies with established departmental policies for attendance, punctuality, procedures and
safety. Complies with organizational policies and procedures. Maintains satisfactory attendance at
Centralized Bed Management educational and departmental meetings, attends all mandatory
education sessions and takes advantage of continuing professional education opportunities.
• Seeks out relevant training or cross training from supervisor. Seeks out guidance from supervisor
and teammates when uncertain of procedure. Solicits feedback from the supervisor to assess the
quality and effectiveness of work. Participates in the dialogue process with supervisor regarding
quality improvement. Demonstrates a personal commitment to continuous quality improvement
through active participation.
