The accomplishment that I am most proud of is simply being a part of something that is near to my heart, something bigger than me. Years ago, my passion for giving back to the community was ignited when I became a member in the Junior League chapters of Charleston, SC. then Durham, NC.
This was the first time I became essentially a Core Volunteer. This organization's mission reflects the vital principles of Habitat for Humanity's. It is one of, "mobilizing members to volunteer, and use resources to service projects that address critical community needs such as, equitable and thriving communities." My chapter in Charleston partnered with Habitat for Humanity to provide volunteers in building a home for a family and I felt blessed to be able participate in making a difference.
In Durham, as an Interior Designer I was asked to collaborate in a Designer Home Showcase with many other designers and local company's. This exciting project not only raised funds for the community but restored the home owned by a family that was in jeopardy of becoming a displaced person. This is a cause that still energizes and defines me.
But, I never truly understood the desperation of a family struggling to find affordable, safe housing until we relocated back to this area. Now, it was our family forced to rent a home in Apex that we were required to replace so many broken items. That was when I met Keith, a dedicated advocate and Store Manager at the Apex ReStore.
Slowly, one project at a time, over the last three years, he always took time to listen and encouraged me in accomplishing each project. Keith not only helped me choose items that needed replacing but also gave me advice how to install things like ceiling fans! So, once again I found myself completely drawn to Habitat for Humanity ReStore principles. Encouraged by the wonderful staff, over time, I accomplished something great. I became a Core Volunteer.
