Approach To Counseling

I have experience working with adolescents and adults in individual, group, family, and correctional setting. Areas of treatment have surrounded personal, behavioral, emotional, relationship, and family difficulties, as well as working with clients with histories of addiction and trauma. I have 7+ years of experience working with At Risk Youth who have mild to severe Emotional Behavior Disorders. I’ve managed an adolescent group home for Emotionally Disturbed children and adolescents. This has given me first- hand experience with crisis intervention and helping families work with the most difficult youth.

I believe counseling should be “Person-Centered” and designed to incorporate the strengths and the needs of each client. Each person is different and possesses their own values, belief systems, and complexities that make them unique and all should be considered and expressed within the individual’s scope of treatment.

In addition to counseling being “Person-Centered”, I utilize “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy”. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a solution-focused approach to treatment, oriented toward solving problems and learning skills. Through our journey together, my goal is to provoke thought and challenge unhealthy thought patterns and help individuals construct new and healthy models that add to their lives.

All our communication, including diagnoses, becomes part of the clinical record, which is accessible to you upon request (unless doing so would be psychologically harmful). I will keep confidential anything that you say to me, with the following exceptions: a) you direct me to tell someone else, b) I determine that you are a danger to yourself or others, c) I am ordered by a court to disclose information, d) I suspect that there is child and/or elder abuse, e) I am working collaboratively with other professionals where disclosure of personal information is necessary to provide optimal care, and/or f) you are a minor for whom confidentiality is limited to the extent exercised by your parent/legal guardian (for minors in the custody of DHHS, this may include Guardian ad Litem programs, as well as court attorneys and judges)

Please note, to protect your confidentiality, I will treat you anonymously in public unless you initiate public interaction.

Use Of Diagnosis - Description

Some health insurance companies will reimburse clients for counseling services, and others will not. If you are
using insurance, they will likely require a mental health diagnosis in order to cover your sessions.
Please note that certain conditions for which people seek counseling may not qualify for reimbursement. Any
diagnosis made as part of your treatment will become part of your permanent insurance records.

Risks Of Therapy - Description

There are risks to psychotherapy. Please note that people sometimes feel worse initially as the therapy progresses. Feelings, memories, and experiences previously unexpressed or in the past can resurface when we work to address your issues and concerns. You may become aware of unmet desires and needs as you progress toward the changes you want in your life. Therapy can be difficult or challenging especially as most of the “work” occurs between sessions in your personal life
