He and I worked together at Bernhard as a senior project manager and worked with me in my position as project manager. As an employee, Joe was always the first one in the office. He was always the best dressed & carried himself as the constant professional. I've always put a premium on leadership among my team members and Joe never failed to deliver. An example was when he first started with Bernhard and took over two projects with Skanska at Duke Universities Craven & Crowl Hall. He printed out the drawings the Friday before starting work on the following Monday. In his first week, he identified $400,000 dollars in change orders that were never priced and submitted by the previous project manager. Joe was consistently shot down on recouping that money but that didn't stop him from persevering and ultimately, he got every penny owed & secured more change orders because of discrepancies in the drawings. Joe is the kind of guy that will not be outworked. The motto 'we don't plan to fail; we fail to plan' does not apply to Joe. He will hold weekly meetings with his staff & his subcontractors to make sure everyone has what they need & prepared for the job. He implements lean concepts so jobsites can be as close to one hundred percent production that is possible. There is not a job too big or too complex that he cannot handle with the toughest general contractors in the industry.
